Orton Effect

8 08 2007

I have been playing around with a Photo effect called Orton Effect using Photoshop. Before today, I had head of the name just never knew what it meant. Essentially it is the blending of a in-focus photo with an out-of-focus photo.

With the power of Photoshop (or any other image editing software) you can achieve the same result fairly easy by screening a the in-focus photo and giving a Gaussian Blur to another layer and multiplying it.
Here are two examples of this effect using photos of flowers I took earlier this year.

Of course, you can call this just a soft version of the original which in a way it is, I still like the effect for some subject. Tried it on a portrait I took and it looked quite stunning as well.
